SHAOGUAN, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Mengmeng, a South China tiger, gave birth to twin cubs on Dec. 31, 2021 at the research base of South China tiger breeding in Shaoguan City in south China's Guangdong Province. In 2021, the mama tiger also gave birth to two cubs Yuanyuan in March and Qingqing in September. Currently, there are 13 South China tigers at the base in Shaoguan, and there are about 200 South China tigers in captivity across China.
The South China tiger is a rare kind endemic to the country. Efforts to breed more of the rare tigers are already underway. Relevant research bases and zoos nationwide are doing their best to improve the survival rate and to boost the population of the species.
