BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese central government spokesperson on Friday slammed a so-called resolution of the European Parliament, saying it interfered in China's Hong Kong affairs.

By making threats of sanctions against China's central government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government officials and relevant enterprises, the resolution exposed the arrogance and ignorance of certain European politicians, said the spokesperson with the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.

Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs, and no external forces have the right to interfere, said the spokesperson, adding that it is time for those European politicians to wake up from their old dream of colonialism.

Noting problems of gender discrimination, xenophobia, police violence, and vaccine hoarding in certain European countries, the spokesperson said European politicians should review their own countries' records of democracy, freedom and human rights.

Since the national security law in the HKSAR came into force and its electoral system was improved, freedom, democracy and human rights in Hong Kong have been fully protected, the spokesperson said.

This is evidenced by a drop in Hong Kong's crime rate, the approval of the new electoral system by over 70 percent of Hong Kong people, a record high number of business operations in Hong Kong with parent companies on the mainland or outside China, and the increasing number of registered media outlets, said the spokesperson.

The Chinese people have the firm will to defend national sovereignty, security and development interests. The so-called resolution is nothing more than a piece of wastepaper, the spokesperson said.
