UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has requested a meeting of the Security Council to address Monday's attacks in Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital city, by Yemen's Houthi militia.

The UAE, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has submitted a letter to Norway, which holds the Security Council presidency for the month of January, for the request, said the UAE mission to the United Nations on Tuesday.

The letter condemns the Houthis' targeting of civilians and civilian objects in flagrant violation of international law. It calls on the Security Council to unequivocally condemn the Houthi attacks with one voice, said the UAE mission in a press release.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for Monday's attacks on the Abu Dhabi International Airport and the nearby industrial area, which caused several civilian casualties. The attacks came nearly one week after the Houthis captured a UAE-flagged ship off the Yemeni coast.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since the Houthi militia overran much of the country and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014. Saudi Arabia has been leading an Arab military coalition that intervened since 2015 to support the Yemeni government. The UAE is part of the Saudi-led coalition.
