SHENYANG, Jan.18 (Xinhua) -- Rail workers in northeast China's Shenyang braced themselves for the country's 40-day-long Spring Festival travel rush when the city slept.

To ensure a safe journey for people heading home, workers at Shenyang Railway Bureau tested equipment outdoors, while temperatures were close to minus 20 degrees Celsius.

This year's Spring Festival travel season is expected to see 1.18 billion passenger trips, up almost 36 percent year on year.

The travel season, also known as chunyun, kicked off Monday and many people will travel to reunite with their families for the Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, which falls on Feb. 1 this year.
