TIANJIN, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese court on Monday sentenced Wang Fuyu, a former senior political advisor of southwest China's Guizhou Province, to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes.

Wang, former chairperson of the Guizhou provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was convicted of taking bribes worth over 434 million yuan (68 million U.S. dollars) by the Tianjin First Intermediate People's Court.

Wang was found taking advantage of the public offices he held while working in Hainan and Guizhou to benefit certain organizations and individuals in terms of business operation, project approval, job promotion or transfer, case handling, and other matters, according to a statement by the court.

The court also found that Wang accepted money and gifts worth 17.35 million yuan using his influence after leaving the previous posts.

The court granted him a lenient punishment as he turned himself in, pled guilty and surrendered his illicit money and property, the statement said.

The leniency in the ruling also took into consideration a 4.8 million yuan bribe in real estate property that Wang had not received, which constituted an attempted crime, the statement added.

Wang was deprived of political rights for life, and had all of his personal property confiscated and illegal gains from bribery recovered and turned over to the state treasury, the court said.

Wang said he will not appeal.
