BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- "Fireflies in the Sun," a Chinese adaptation of the 2002 Nick Cassavetes film "John Q," has become the newest 1-billion-plus yuan earner at China's box office.
The total box office revenue of the crime thriller, released on Dec. 17, 2021, exceeded 1 billion yuan (about 157 million U.S. dollars) over the weekend.
The Wanda Pictures film starring Xiao Yang has been the first to hit the milestone since the 2021 year-end movie period started in early December, despite the mixed views it generated on different Chinese internet platforms.
The U.S. original film starring Denzel Washington grossed 102 million dollars globally. ■
