LJUBLJANA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia recorded 7,420 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, up from 5,164 a day before, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) said on Wednesday, which is a new all-time high for the second day in a row.
It said the total number of confirmed cases from the start of the pandemic in March 2020 has reached 505,929. Slovenia has 2.1 million citizens.
"The registered number of new infections is lower than the real number of infections as it ... depends on testing practices," NIJZ warned on its website. At present Slovenia offers free COVID-19 tests to all its citizens.
Health Minister Janez Poklukar said on Tuesday that most new infections represent the Omicron variant and called upon citizens to get vaccinated, announcing a new vaccination campaign from Thursday to Saturday, when vaccination centers all over the country will be open to all between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Although Slovenia has been badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, so far only 57 percent of its population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
For months, it has been mandatory for citizens to wear a face mask whenever in a public space. And only those who have been vaccinated, have recently overcome COVID-19 or have tested negative can enter most public spaces. ■
