MADRID, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- La Liga struggler Cadiz has confirmed former Espanyol and Valladolid coach Sergio Gonzalez as their new head coach.
Gonzalez replaced Alvaro Cervera, who was sacked on Tuesday after five years in charge, in which he led Cadiz from the third-tier Segunda B to the top flight. However, he was sacked following a run of results that leaves the club second from bottom of La Liga with just 14 points this season.
"Cadiz Club de Futbol and Sergio Gonzalez have reached agreement for his arrival as first-team coach," confirmed the club on its official website.
In his last job, Sergio led Real Valladolid to promotion to La Liga and remained as coach for three years in the top flight until they were relegated at the end of last season.
His first game in charge is a Copa del Rey last-16 tie away to second division Sporting Gijon on Saturday. ■
