MADRID, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- La Liga strugglers Cadiz on Tuesday sacked coach Alvaro Cervera after almost five years in charge.

The man who led Cadiz to two promotions and kept them in the top flight last season was sacked in the wake of Sunday's 2-0 defeat away to Osasuna, leaving his side 19th in the table with just 14 points.

Former Espanyol and Real Valladolid coach Sergio Gonzalez is expected to be named as his replacement in the coming hours.

The decision means Cadiz is the sixth La Liga club to sack their coach this season, following Levante (who have sacked two coaches), Getafe (Michel Gonzalez), FC Barcelona (Ronald Koeman), Elche (Fran Escriba) and Alaves (Jose Calleja).

Cadiz has struggled to score goals all season, netting just 15 all campaign, and it is thought relations between Cervera and some of his key players became strained after several members of the squad were discovered to have gone out the day before a league defeat away to Rayo Vallecano.

If Sergio Gonzalez is named as Cervera's successor, he will make his debut next weekend in the last-16 Copa del Rey tie away to Sporting Gijon.
