LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Los Angeles County on Monday reported 43,582 new positive cases of COVID-19 and 13 more related deaths, raising the total caseload to over 2 million, the department of public health said.

"The current surge of COVID-19 infections also continues to drive up hospitalizations, as today the number of COVID-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals has topped 3,400, the highest level since Feb. 11, 2021," the healthcare authority said in a press release.

The department also noted that many patients were admitted to the hospital and upon arrival tested positive for COVID-19 although the virus was not the sole reason for the hospital trip.

The department also listed a series of key data for the current pandemic situation. As of Monday, 14 percent of the hospitalized patients with COVID-19 infection are in the ICU, and 7 percent are on a ventilator, while 23 percent of ICU beds are currently being occupied by COVID-19 patients, an increase of 9 percent from last week.

"Between Dec. 15 and Dec. 28, the ICU admission rate for unvaccinated individuals was 21 times higher than the rate among fully vaccinated individuals," the press release said.
