ISTANBUL, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Airlines (THY), Turkey's flag carrier, said on Tuesday that it has evacuated 167 people from Kazakhstan's Almaty amid the unrest in the country.

A plane carrying THY flight attendants, private air freight company personnel and some Turkish citizens landed at Turkey's biggest city Istanbul on Tuesday afternoon, the carrier said in a written statement.

THY began the evacuation after obtaining necessary permissions from the Kazakhstan government and civil aviation authority, it added.

The THY press office told Xinhua that the company would resume its flights to Kazakhstan's capital Nur-Sultan on Jan. 13, and talks are going on with officials about restarting scheduled flights to Almaty. THY suspended all flights to Kazakhstan on Jan. 7 after massive unrest erupted in the country.
