Winter sports are traditionally popular in northern China, where cold and long winter is in favor of the sports. But with the Beijing Winter Olympics drawing near, winter sports have also gained popularity in the mild regions of the country.
In line with engaging 300 million people in ice and snow sports in China, the number of ski resorts increased from 500 in 2015 to 700 in 2020, and the number of skiers increased from 12.5 million to 20 million.
Some of the newly added facilities are in the mild Chinese regions, such as east China's Hangzhou.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will take place between Feb. 4 and 20, followed by the Winter Paralympics from March 4 to 13.
