NEW DELHI, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chief Minister of Indian capital region Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said he had tested positive for COVID-19.
Following this Kejriwal has isolated himself at home.
The Delhi chief minister, who addressed massive rallies to campaign for upcoming polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand in the past three days, said he had "mild symptoms" and urged people who came in touch with him to test themselves.
"I have tested positive for COVID-19. Mild symptoms. Have isolated myself at home. Those who came in touch with me in last few days, kindly isolate yourself and get yourself tested," Kejriwal wrote on social media.
Delhi has reported a rising positivity rate with 4,099 new cases in the past 24 hours, officials said.
Local health minister of Delhi Satyendra Jain said on Monday that the latest genome sequencing report shows the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been found in 84 percent of the samples tested in Delhi.
Delhi has sounded a "yellow alert" over the rise in COVID-19 Omicron variant cases.
Yellow alert or level-I alert entails restrictions like night curfew, closure of schools and colleges, opening of non-essential shops based on an odd-even basis, halved seating capacity in Metro trains and buses among others.
Meanwhile, India's federal health ministry said on Tuesday morning that the Omicron case tally across India has reached 1,892 patients.
Of these cases, 568 have been detected in Maharashtra, followed by 382 in Delhi.
The Omicron strain of COVID-19, known to be highly transmissible, has triggered alarm bells across the globe.
Indian government has said with the Omicron variant "spreading rapidly," there was a need to avoid unnecessary travel and mass gatherings. Enditem
