PARIS, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- French Ligue 1 club Monaco on Monday confirmed that Belgian Philippe Clement will take charge of the team, replacing Niko Kovac who was sacked last weekend.
47-year-old Clement penned a three-year contract and is set to make his debut on Sunday in their away game against Nantes.
"We are pleased about the arrival of Philippe Clement at AS Monaco. His proven ability to bring out the best in young and talented teams while achieving ever-higher goals throughout his career makes him the right person," Monaco's vice president and CEO Oleg Petrov said.
Clement has won three Belgian Super League titles in a row before coming to French Ligue 1, with the first one with Genk and then a double with Brugge.
Monaco are currently in sixth place in the table, 17 points behind runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
The 2017 Ligue 1 champions have won three of their past four league games, but a slow start to the season and a failure in the Champions League play-offs in August have resulted in Kovac's departure.
The former Bayern Munich manager arrived at Stade Louis II in June 2020 and led the Principality side to a third-finish in the league last season. Enditem
