BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

MALARIA ERADICATION

The National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have launched a joint program to call for global scientific research cooperation in 2022 to accelerate progress toward malaria eradication.

The program will fund research projects that develop innovative solutions for malaria vector control, including outdoor vector control strategies, tools and products.

ARTIFICIAL SUN

The experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST), or the Chinese "artificial sun," has achieved a continuous high-temperature plasma operation for 1,056 seconds in the latest experiment on Thursday, the longest time of operation of its kind in the world.

The ultimate goal of EAST is to create nuclear fusion like the Sun, using deuterium abound in the sea to provide a steady stream of clean energy.

5G BASE STATIONS

The number of 5G base stations in operation in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality had exceeded 70,000 by the end of 2021.

The municipality has been promoting 5G and other new infrastructure construction in recent years while facilitating the integration between 5G and various industries such as manufacturing and logistics. Enditem
