COLOMBO, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's health authorities on Friday said 41 more people had tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19, bringing the total infections of the variant to 45 in the country.

According to Director of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Sri Jayewardenepura University Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, a total of 45 cases of the Omicron variant had been confirmed in their labs at the university as of Friday, with 41 detected on Friday.

Dr. Jeewandara said Sri Lanka has plenty of mitigation measures against the Omicron variant and urged people to get their booster doses without delay.

The Health Ministry said Omicron cases could increase in the future and thus raised the importance of receiving the vaccine booster doses without further delay.

According to official figures from the Health Ministry, nearly 63 percent of the total population have been fully vaccinated with Sinopharm, the leading vaccine administered, followed by AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, and Sputnik V.
