Tanzania's Zanzibar authorities have deployed about 150 special police and security officers along the archipelago's glorious Indian Ocean beaches to ensure enhanced security for tourists.
DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibar authorities on Tuesday started deploying about 150 special police and security officers along the archipelago's glorious Indian Ocean beaches to protect tourists.
On Nov. 19, Tanzania's Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi launched a special police unit for protecting tourists visiting the Islands.
Rashid Hadid Rashid, the South Unguja regional commissioner, said the deployment of the special police and security officers started in North Unguja along the coastal areas of Nungwi.

Launching the deployment of the special law enforcers, Rashid urged them to ensure that tourists were in safe hands from their arrival until when they left the Zanzibar archipelago.
"The government is committed to guaranteeing security of tourists to enable them enjoy their stay peacefully," he said.
Speaking after the launch of the special police unit on Nov. 19, President Mwinyi said the new unit was intended to guarantee the protection and security of visitors in the Zanzibar archipelago.
Zanzibar is Tanzania's semi-autonomous archipelago in the Indian Ocean and tourism is Zanzibar's largest economic sector and essential for local socio-economic stability. ■
