ULAN BATOR, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of livestock animals in Mongolia reached 67.3 million at the end of 2021, up by 0.4 percent from the previous year, the country's National Statistics Office (NSO) said Tuesday.
A preliminary result of the 2021 livestock census by the NSO showed that sheep and goats accounted for the majority of all livestock, with 46.2 percent and 39.3 percent respectively.
Among the country's 21 provinces, the northernmost Khuvsgul has the largest number of livestock with 5.9 million, followed by the central province of Arkhangai and the eastern province of Khentii, with 5.6 million and 5 million, respectively.
There are now 246,200 herder households with livestock animals, up 4.2 percent from last year.
Mongolia is one of the world's last surviving nomadic countries. The promotion of animal husbandry is seen as the most viable solution to diversify the landlocked country's mining-dependent economy. Enditem
