RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Paraguay international goalkeeper Roberto Fernandez has renewed his contract with newly promoted Botafogo, the Brazilian club announced on Wednesday.

Fernandez, whose existing deal had been due to expire this month, will be tied to the Rio de Janeiro outfit until December next year.

"I'm very happy to inform you that I'm staying at Botafogo. I hope 2022 is a year of many victories and happiness for all of us," Fernandez said in a video published on the club's official website.

Fernandez has not played since September 2020, when he suffered a serious injury to his right knee. However, the 33-year-old resumed full training in November and is expected to be available when the new season begins next month.

The shot-stopper has made 110 first-team appearances for Botafogo since joining the club from Brazilian rivals Figueirense in 2017.

Botafogo, a traditional powerhouse of Brazilian football, returned to the country's top flight in November, a year after being relegated for just the third time in their history. Enditem
