HONG KONG, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 17 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, taking the local total tally to 10,710.

All the new cases were local infections, of which four had an unknown origin. There were also less than 20 cases testing positive preliminarily, according to a CHP press briefing.

Sophia Chan, Secretary for Food and Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, said at the press briefing that over the past two weeks, the HKSAR government has effectively controlled the epidemic by conducting intensive compulsory testings.

Over the past week, the average number of daily new confirmed cases has dropped 75 percent from the peak in late January, Chan said, adding that if the epidemic situation remains stable, the authorities will consider relaxing some of the social distancing measures, such as allowing restaurants to extend dine-in services to 10:00 p.m. and to raise the cap on the number of people per table from two to four.

According to Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, 450 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated in public hospitals and the community treatment facility at AsiaWorld-Expo, and 22 patients are in critical condition.

A total of 183 COVID-19 confirmed patients have passed away in public hospitals so far. Enditem
