HONG KONG, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 53 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking its total tally to 8,724.
The new confirmed cases included 50 local infections, with 14 cases of unknown origin. The three imported cases involved two from South Africa and one from Indonesia. There were also over 40 preliminary cases, according to a CHP press briefing.
Chui Tak-yi, Under Secretary for Food and Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, told the press briefing that 434 new local cases were reported in Hong Kong from Dec. 22 to Dec. 28, with about 36 percent of them untraceable, up from 33 percent in the previous week.
He said the number of new cases was still at a high level. It has slightly declined over the past week but not on a significant downward trend.
According to Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, 879 COVID-19 patients are being treated in public hospitals and the community treatment facility at AsiaWorld-Expo, and 47 patients are in critical condition.
A total of 139 COVID-19 confirmed patients have passed away in public hospitals so far. Enditem
