LJUBLJANA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Major sporting events in Slovenia are being cancelled as a measure to contain the spread of coronavirus, according to the Slovenian Press Agency STA.

The Alpine Ski World Cup event, scheduled to take place in Kranjska Gora at the weekend, was cancelled on Thursday, and the Ski Flying World Championships at Planica, scheduled for 19 to 22 March, have been postponed.

Organisers of the Vitranc Cup in Kranjska Gora said the event was cancelled based on recommendations from the International Ski Federation (FIS) and in consultation with the National Public Health Institute.

They added that three people participating in the Alpine Ski World Cup caravan had Covid-19 symptoms, including one who tested positive for coronavirus. All three have been quarantined.

The decision effectively ends the Alpine Ski World Cup for men, as the Cortina d'Ampezzo event in Italy, which is the last event on the schedule, had been canceled beforehand.

Slovenia's outgoing Prime Minister Marjan Sarec announced that an epidemic would be declared in the country on Thursday based on fresh data on the spread of coronavirus in Slovenia.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Slovenia rose by 25 on Wednesday to 82 by 9am on Thursday.
