BUCHAREST, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Cases of COVID-19 infection in Romania surged by 12 on Tuesday, bringing the total to 29.

This is the largest increase in a day since the country confirmed its first case on Feb. 27.

The capital Bucharest became the most infected place in the country as eight of the 12 confirmed patients on the day were from the city.

All infected people in Romania could be traced back to Italy as of Monday, but Tuesday's infections saw returnees from Israel, Germany and the UK.

Meanwhile, Romania recorded the first infection in pregnant women and the first infection in children.

As the epidemic situation becomes increasingly serious, all primary and secondary schools, as well as kindergartens across the country will be closed starting on Wednesday.

Earlier, the authorities also decided to suspend flights as well as the road and rail transport of people to and from Italy until March 23 and to the end of the month, respectively.

In neighboring Bulgaria, 6 cases have so far been reported after the detection of two new ones on Tuesday evening.
