LOS ANGELES, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Despite heavy rain, thousands of spectators lined the streets of Pasadena in Los Angeles County on the first day of 2026 to watch the annual Rose Parade, a signature New Year's tradition in U.S. Southern California.

The 137th Rose Parade kicked off Thursday morning in Pasadena, known as the "City of Roses." It was the first time in two decades that the parade was held in rainy conditions, as a powerful winter storm drenched the region.

Themed "The Magic in Teamwork," this year's parade featured dozens of flower-decorated floats, equestrian units and marching bands from across the United States and around the world along the 5.5-mile route.

Among the highlights was a float, titled "Rising Together," depicting a phoenix ascending from flames to symbolize renewal and collective strength.

Co-sponsored by the California Community Foundation and the Black Freedom Fund, the float paid tribute to the 31 residents who lost their lives in the 2025 wildfires and honored the resilience of more than 13,000 families who lost their homes.

Meanwhile, multiple burn-scar areas in Los Angeles County, which were severely damaged by the Eaton Fire nearly a year ago, have been placed under evacuation warnings beginning Wednesday, including large sections of the Pasadena and Altadena foothills.
