TOKYO, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The 7th AI Expo Tokyo Spring kicking off Wednesday is showcasing 250 kinds of leading-edge products and services based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology in various fields such as demand forecasting, shipping, fishery, food safety, medical care and machine translation.

The three-day expo is an important part of NexTech Week TOKYO Spring -- a comprehensive trade show that gathers advanced technologies such as AI, blockchain, and quantum computing -- held at Tokyo Big Sight convention center.

Demand forecasting plays a vital role in optimizing inventory management, purchasing, production, distribution among other processes in such industries as manufacturing and retail. DATAFLUCT, Inc., a Tokyo-based data analytics company, demonstrated its self-developed demand forecast system, which uses machine learning algorithms to analyze internal data such as inventory, prices, and sales, as well as external data like weather and traffic to predict demand with high precision.

In the past, the prediction accuracy of manual calculation was fairly low, which often resulted in either insufficient or excess inventory, according to a staff of DATAFLUCT, Inc., while currently maximizing benefits is possible as AI technology has significantly improved prediction accuracy, thereby reducing the surplus or shortage of inventory.

The system can also automatically calculate the optimal number of delivery vehicles, plan delivery routes and staff the most reasonable number of personnel, thus contributing to minimizing costs and greatly improving efficiency.

Brains Corporation, a Tokyo-based company that develops and sells image recognition devices, presented its AI-based image processing system that detects objects in front of a ship by analyzing images taken by infrared cameras mounted on the bow of the ship.

The system, together with a high-precision GPS and acceleration sensors, can be used for collecting accurate data of the distance, speed and direction of potential obstacles, which thereafter enter the ship automatic control system and help the ship effectively avoid the obstacles.

A total of 20 AI corporations from the southern Chinese metropolis Shenzhen attended the biannual expo as a group, whose creative hardware and software products have grabbed wide attention.

The online translation platform of CloudTranslation Technology Co., Ltd. is based on the company's self-developed third-generation Deep Neural Network machine translation engine, which is trained with hundreds of millions of high-quality industry-specific words and supports accurate mutual translation for more than 80 languages and 20 industries. The platform allows bilingual comparison and editing after translation, and can also translate PDF documents, web pages and images, etc.

Zhang Yifan, the company's project director, said that another multimedia translation platform recognizes dialogues in uploaded audio or video files and translates the dialogues into the target language before automatically generating subtitles.

NexTech Week TOKYO Spring has attracted around 300 exhibitors and 25,000 attendees this year.
