JAKARTA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- A family of five was killed early Friday in a house fire in western Jakarta, local police said.
The blaze broke out at around 2 a.m. local time in the Grogol Petamburan area and was extinguished about an hour later after dozens of fire engines were deployed.
Local officials said the fire spread rapidly inside the house, trapping the occupants who were asleep. The house was locked from the inside and fitted with iron grilles, preventing escape despite neighbors' attempts to wake the family.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. ■
