WASHINGTON, April 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the White House is in "heated negotiations" over the war against Iran.

"Right now we're in heated negotiations," Trump told Fox News in a phone interview, hours before the 8:00 p.m. ET deadline Trump set for Iran to make a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The talks were steered directly by Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, according to a CNN report, citing a source from the Middle East region.

"Some good news is expected from both sides soon" and a deal is expected to be closed Tuesday night, the source was quoted as saying.

Trump will respond to a proposal for a two-week extension to the deadline for U.S. strikes on Iran, delivered by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday.

Trump threatened on Tuesday morning that Iran's "whole civilization will die tonight" if a deal is not done.
