BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Brunei is currently experiencing the northeast monsoon season, which is expected to persist until March 2026, according to the Brunei Meteorological Department.

In its rainfall seasonal outlook, the department projected on Thursday that January 2026 will record above-normal rainfall, with total precipitation exceeding 440 millimeters.

For February 2026, rainfall is also forecast to be above normal, with total rainfall amounts of over 230 mm. Meanwhile, March 2026 is expected to see slightly above-normal rainfall, ranging between 170 mm and 200 mm.

Over Brunei waters, sea conditions are generally expected to remain at a slight to moderate state, with wave heights ranging between 0.8 meters and 1.5 meters.

The department has advised the public to take precautionary actions in view of the forecasted weather conditions.

There is a high risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as near river banks during periods of continuous heavy rainfall and high tide. The department also warned of potential risks, including landslides, fallen trees and blown-off roofs during heavy showers and gusty conditions.
