KABUL, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed, and one other was injured after the roof of a mud house collapsed amid heavy rainfall in western Afghanistan's Herat province, a local media outlet reported on Thursday.
The incident occurred in the Kabkan region of Obe district on Wednesday, after intense downpours weakened the structure. The victims included a woman and four children, Ariana News quoted a local official.
Over the past three days, most parts of Afghanistan have experienced heavy rainfall and snowfall, triggering flash floods in several regions. In a separate incident, heavy rain and flooding claimed one life and injured four others in the neighboring Farah province on Monday night.
In Afghanistan's remote areas, residential houses are predominantly constructed from mud, a construction method that increases the risk of collapse during severe weather, leading to grave casualties and substantial property damage. ■
