OSLO, July 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 80 percent of new private passenger cars registered in Denmark in the first half of 2025 were electric, underscoring the country's accelerating shift towards greener transportation, according to figures released by Mobility Denmark on Tuesday.
A total of 89,547 new cars were registered across Denmark from January to June, marking a slight increase of 3.8 percent compared to the same period last year. Despite monthly fluctuations, the overall market has remained stable, Mobility Denmark said.
Electric cars have seen a significant surge in popularity this year. A total of 57,171 new electric cars were registered in the first half, up nearly 47 percent from the same period last year. Electric vehicles accounted for 63.8 percent of all new car registrations during the period, compared to around 45 percent in the first half of 2024.
Among private car buyers, the preference for electric vehicles was even more pronounced, with electric cars making up almost 82 percent of new private registrations in the first half and close to 86 percent in June.
"There was great demand for electric cars in 2024, and we can see that interest has only grown this year, especially among private individuals who have really embraced the electric car," said Mads Rorvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark.
He called on policymakers to consider a simplified taxation system to support Denmark's ongoing green transition and ensure long-term incentives for electric vehicle adoption. ■
