CANBERRA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Children from various countries gathered here on Sunday to participate in Mother's Day celebrations.

Through singing, dancing, and recitation, the kids expressed their appreciation and best wishes to their mothers. The event also featured a handicraft area and a multicultural exhibition zone, where parents and children got together to explore and experience the cultures of different nations.

This year marked the 101st observance of Mother's Day in Australia. The holiday began to gain popularity in the country during the 1920s, inspired by the Mother's Day movement initiated in the United States by Anna Jarvis in 1908.

In 1924, Australian woman Janet Heyden launched a campaign to deliver gifts to lonely mothers in hospitals. This initiative evolved into a broader public celebration, incorporating the use of white carnations symbolizing purity and love, and received support from Methodist publications in its promotion.
