ACCRA, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Ghana on Thursday marked the 68th anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule with a scaled-down national parade on the forecourt of Jubilee House, the country's presidency, in the capital, Accra.

Addressing the parade, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said that the independence anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the country's history, learn from past lessons, and forge a new path for progress and development.

"Every anniversary of our independence must present an opportunity for us to account for the legacy we are building for the next generation. We, of this generation, are merely custodians of this country and the resources entrusted to us. We must manage them wisely today for the generations of tomorrow," he said.

The scaled-down celebration aligned with the need for fiscal discipline as the nation undergoes economic reforms, with expenditure cuts across all sectors, Mahama said.

The president reiterated his commitment as president to providing bold leadership and a clear vision to navigate Ghana's current economic challenges while safeguarding the future.

In 1957, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence.
