BEIRUT, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed Monday in an Israeli drone strike on a civilian car traveling on the Naqoura-Tyre highway in southwest Lebanon, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua.
The sources, who spoke anonymously, said "a white civilian car was targeted by two air-to-air missiles fired from an Israeli drone in the Naqoura axis, killing two people inside and setting the car on fire."
The sources added that a civil defense ambulance transferred the bodies to a hospital in the city of Tyre while members of the Islamic Health Authority and the civil defense worked to put out the fire that spread to surrounding areas.
Israeli drones and warplanes launched 11 airstrikes on Monday at dawn and in the morning on seven border villages and towns in southern Lebanon, destroying 10 homes and damaging about 30 more, according to the sources.
Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border have escalated since Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets strikes launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas' sudden attack on Israel the day before. Israel has been retaliating by firing heavy artillery or air raids on Lebanon. ■
