DHAKA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Shiite Muslims in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Wednesday held the Ashura mourning procession to commemorate the martyrdom of a grandson of the Islam Prophet, who was killed in the "Battle of Karbala" in present-day Iraq.
The large procession paraded through the city's main streets starting from the old Dhaka's Hussaini Dalan, a key venue for majlis or gatherings.
Ashura, or 10th of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, is observed in Bangladesh as well as in other Muslim countries to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his followers.
The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh. ■
