HANOI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's tuna exports are projected to reach 456.8 million U.S. dollars in the first half of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 20 percent, Vietnam News Agency reported Wednesday, citing the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers.

Cao Thi Kim Lan, director of the Binh Dinh province's Fisheries Joint Stock Company, said the exports could reach 1 billion dollars again this year if the raw material shortages are resolved.

She proposed the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development consider amending regulations so that the certificates of raw materials could be issued immediately when loading and unloading are completed from fishing vessels under the supervision of port staff.

According to experts, Vietnam rose from the eighth place in the list of the world's largest tuna exporters 10 years ago to the fifth position in 2023, behind Thailand, Ecuador, Spain, and China.

The country's tuna exports rose by 22 percent in the first five months of this year to 388 million dollars. Exports to Israel, Russia and South Korea rose significantly by 64 percent, 58 percent and 66 percent, respectively, said the association.
