BERLIN, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Spain international goalkeeper Unai Simon explained on Monday that he will have an operation to resolve a wrist injury at the end of Euro 2024.
Simon, who plays for Athletic Bilbao, explained that he suffered the injury in a domestic accident several months ago, adding that although the problem gives him constant pain, it doesn't stop him from either playing or training.
"I'll have the operation when the European Championship finishes, and then we will see how long I am out of action," explained the goalkeeper, who only recently celebrated his 27th birthday.
"I haven't given it much thought, and it hasn't affected me, and we have seen during the season that it hasn't affected me," added Simon, who, despite the problem, won the 'Zamora' award for the best goalkeeping record in La Liga last season.
The next La Liga season kicks off in mid-August, and if Simon is unfit, Julen Agirrezabala will get a chance to start in La Liga. Agirrezabala was the first choice as Athletic Bilbao won the Copa del Rey last season for the first time in 40 years and recently extended his contract until June 2027. ■
