KUWAIT CITY, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah officially inaugurated the Al-Zour Refinery, marking the start of full operations at the country's largest refining facility.

The ceremony, held on Wednesday at the Al-Zour complex around 90 km south of Kuwait City, also saw the participation of high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

Deputy Prime Minister and Oil Minister Imad Al-Ateeqi hailed the project as a cornerstone achievement, aligning with both Kuwait's national development plan and the 2040 strategy of the state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC).

Al-Ateeqi also noted that the full operation of the refinery solidified Kuwait's position as a key global energy supplier.

The refinery's full operational capacity is 615,000 barrels per day and adheres to the latest environmental standards, according to Wadha Al-Khatib, acting CEO of KPC subsidiary Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC).

The Al-Zour Refinery, with extensive participation of Chinese construction companies, is also seen as an example of the alignment between China's Belt and Road Initiative and Kuwait's "2035 National Vision."

Over half of the project contracts were awarded to Chinese companies. Notably, Sinopec Fifth Construction Company completed six refining units by 2021, while Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Company, acting as a general contractor, finalized 15 core units in 2019.
