LONDON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Kai Havertz's 86th minute header from the right wing gave Arsenal a 2-1 home win over Brentford and take them to the top of the Premier League ahead of the clash between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Arsenal's eighth consecutive league win piles the pressure on the two sides that kicked off the weekend in first and second place in the table and who go head-to-head in one of the games of the season on Sunday afternoon.
Declan Rice's 19th minute header put Arsenal ahead until the home goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was caught out by Yoane Wissa, who charged down his long clearance to level in the fourth minute of first half injury time.
Ramsdale redeemed himself with a wonderful save to deny Ivan Toney in the second half as Brentford put up stiff resistance, but it was Havertz who had the final word as he headed home Ben White's cross.
Manchester United deepened Everton's relegation worries with two first half penalties from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, which were both won by fouls on winger Alejandro Garnacho.
Everton have only themselves to blame for their defeat though, as they created enough chances to take at least a point from the game.
That defeat allowed Luton to close the gap on Sean Dyche's side as Cauley Woodrow nodded in a last-gasp equalizer to give Luton a 1-1 draw away to Crystal Palace.
Palace took the lead from Jean-Philippe Mateta after 11 minutes and they had chances to increase their lead before Woodrow got a touch on Andros Townsend's cross with virtually the last act of the game.
Wolverhampton Wanderers kept their hopes of qualifying for Europe alive with a 2-1 win at home over Fulham.
Wolves were missing strikers Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan, but took a 52nd minute lead thanks to Rayan Ait-Nouri. Hey then had a stroke of luck after Nelson Semedo's shot took a big deflection off Tom Cairney on its way to goal.
Alex Iwobi pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 98th minute, but there was no time to look for an equalizer.
Sheffield United wasted a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 away to Bournemouth after Monday's 6-0 humiliation at home by Arsenal. Goals from Gustavo Hamer and Jack Robinson made it 2-0 for the visitors in the 64th minute, but Dango Ouattara got Bournemouth back into the game with 16 minutes left and Enes Unal netted from close range in the 91st minute to save a point for Bournemouth, who then laid siege to the Sheffield goal in the closing minutes. ■
