WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Jordan Stolz of the United States broke the world record to win the men's 1,000m gold medal at the speed skating World Cup in Salt Lake City on Friday.

Stolz crossed the line in one minute and 5.37 seconds, beating the previous mark of 1:05.69 set by Russian skater Pavel Kulizhnikov in 2020.

China's Ning Zhongyan finished runner-up with a time of 1:06.97, while the bronze went to David Bosa of Italy in 1:07.06.

In the women's 1,000m, Miho Takagi of Japan clocked 1:12.77 for her third World Cup victory in the category this season. Kimi Goetz of the United States settled for the second place in 1:12.85, while China's Han Mei came in third in 1:13.64.

Also on Friday, Joy Beune and Irene Schouten of the Netherlands completed a 1-2 finish in the women's 3,000m race, while South Korean skater Chung Jae-won bagged the gold medal of the men's mass start.
