PHNOM PENH, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- More than 4.3 million people in Cambodia have so far participated in the country's plastic-free campaign, according to a Ministry of Environment's news release on Thursday.

Launched on Sept. 1, 2023, the campaign under the slogan "Today, I Don't Use Plastics" was designed to encourage people to refuse to use plastic bags.

Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth said the campaign has been gaining traction as more and more people are committed to a plastic-free Cambodia.

"So far, the campaign has garnered more than 4.3 million direct participants, including teachers, students, workers, and other contributors throughout the kingdom," he said.

He thanked all participants for their contributions to protecting the environment, saying that the reduction of plastic use will contribute to Cambodia's clean, green and sustainable development.

"Clean homes will attract more tourists and investors to Cambodia," Sophalleth said.

Meanwhile, the minister also urged people to plant more trees in order to achieve 60 percent forest cover and a carbon-neutral country by 2050.
