China's Gao takes silver at ISU Speed Skating World Cup

WARSAW, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Olympic champion Gao Tingyu secured his second medal at the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland, finishing second in the 500m race on Sunday.

Gao, the Beijing 2022 gold medalist, aimed to maintain his winning form after clinching first place in the 500m race on Saturday. The 25-year-old showcased his prowess again in the same event, recording a time of 34.79 seconds, securing a silver medal. Laurent Dubreuil of Canada edged out Gao by a mere 0.06 seconds to take gold, while Poland's Damian Zurek earned third place.

In the men's 5,000m event, Dutchman Patrick Roest emerged as the fastest with a time of 6:18.01, outperforming Hallgeir Engebraten of Norway and Italy's Davide Ghiotto, who finished in second and third place, respectively. China's Wu Yu placed eighth with a time of 6:27.77.

Miho Takagi of Japan claimed the title in the women's 1,000m, clocking 1:15.28, ahead of the American duo Brittany Bowe (1:16.20) and Kimi Goetz (1:16.25).

In the women's mass start, Irene Schouten of the Netherlands took home the gold medal. Canada's Ivanie Blodin secured second place, with Mia Kilburg-Manganello of the United States in third.

Sunday marked the conclusion of the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in Tomaszow Mazowiecki.
