100-day countdown to Chengdu 2021: re-take China's Universiade journey

CHENGDU, China, April 19 (Xinhua) -- With just 100 days to go until the start of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, how about a bit of flashback? From Beijing 2001 to Shenzhen 2011 and then land in Chengdu 2021, let Xinhua take you on a tour of China's World University Games journey.

China sent four track and field athletes to participate in the 1959 Summer Universiade held in Turin, Italy, since then, the country did not send any athletes to compete until the eighth edition of the Games.

In 1975, the Federation of University Sports of China was officially established and China was admitted as an official member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Since the ninth Universiade held in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1977, China has sent delegations to all the World University Games held to date.

In 1979, Chinese diver Chen Xiaoxia triumphed in the women's 10m platform at the tenth Summer Universiade in Mexico City, Mexico, marking China's first-ever gold medal in World University Games.

The Chinese women's volleyball team led by Lang Ping won the championship in the 11th Universiade held in Bucharest, Romania in 1981, making a big breakthrough for China's ball games in world competitions. The 1981 Universiade marks the start of the "Five Consecutive Championships" for the Chinese women's volleyball team. Since then, the Chinese women's volleyball team has won a total of six Universiade championships and achieved three consecutive winnings in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

In 1982, China held the country's first National University Games in Beijing, as 2255 athletes competed in athletics, gymnastics, artistic gymnastics and table tennis.

The 21st World University Games were held in Beijing, China from August 22 to September 1, 2001. This was the first time that China had hosted a world-class multi-sport event, as well as the first time that a Summer Universiade had been held in China. The Chinese sports delegation achieved great success in the Beijing Universiade, winning 54 gold, 25 silver and 24 bronze medals, placing them at the top of the gold medal table.

Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang clocked a time of 13.33 seconds to title the men's 110m hurdlers at the 2001 Beijing Summer Universiade in Beijing. Since then, he has gradually shown dominance in the category.

From August 12 to 23, 2011, the 26th Summer Universiade was successfully held in Shenzhen with the slogan "Start Here". The Chinese delegation topped the medal table with 75 golds.

On December 13, 2018, the International University Sports Federation held a standing committee meeting in Braga, Portugal, announcing that Chengdu, China had won the right to host the 2021 World University Summer Games.

The 30th World University Summer Games came to a close in Naples, Italy on July 14, 2019. Oleg Matytsin, president of the International University Sports Federation, handed over the FISU flag to Chengdu mayor Luo Qiang. During the Chengdu theme performance, Chinese elements such as pandas, Chinese kung fu and Chinese opera appeared on stage, receiving rounds of applause from the audience.

The slogan of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games: Chengdu Makes Dreams Come True.

On December 30, 2019, the slogan, emblem and mascot for the 31st World University Summer Games in Chengdu were unveiled at the Universiade Village Chengdu University.

The slogan for the Chengdu University Games is "Chengdu Makes Dreams Come True."

The emblem of the University Games combines the letter "U" in English, corresponding to the World University Games, with one of the symbols of the Tianfu culture, the Sun God Bird. The emblem consists of four gradient color blocks in emerald green, scarlet, bright yellow and lake blue, corresponding to the hosting philosophy of "Sustainable, Smart, Spirited and Sharing", and is in line with the elements of the FISU logo.

The mascot for the University Games is a panda named "Rongbao." In addition to holding the University Games torch with the number "31" in its hand, Rongbao's ears, eyes and tail are also shaped like flames.

"Rong Huo", the torch of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, was officially unveiled for the first time at the Jinsha Site Museum on August 31, 2021. The name "Rong Huo" (meaning the Chengdu Flame) uses Chengdu's nickname "Rong" and can be interpreted as "harmony" in the Chengdu dialect.

A total of 49 venues and facilities will be used for Chengdu 2021, with the opening ceremony being held at the 120,000 square-meter "silver frisbee" shaped Dong'an Lake Sports Park Stadium, and the closing ceremony being held at the world's largest panoramic surround sound, half-indoor theater Chengdu Open Air Music Park.

   

The official website of the 2021 FISU Chengdu World University Games released the video "100%" on April 18 to celebrate the upcoming 100-day countdown.

"With just 100 days to go until the start of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, it's time to get excited about this incredible event. Get ready for an incredible showcase of athleticism, sportsmanship, and international unity!" Chengdu 2021 writes on its website on Wednesday.
