DHAKA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- A massive fire broke out at a popular clothing market in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka on Saturday morning.
Ershad Hossain, senior duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, told Xinhua that 30 fire engines were fighting the fire in the city's major "New Super Market."
The fire sent thick black smoke into the air, visible several kilometers away.
The cause of the fire, which broke out around 6:00 a.m. local time, has not been ascertained, as the security officials have yet to comment on the incident.
Firefighting units of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force, along with the Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion members, reached the spot to assist the fire service.
Brigadier General Md Main Uddin, director general of the department of fire service and civil defense, told journalists on the spot that "the fire is under control" though it has not yet been completely doused. TV reports showed fires were still raging in some parts of the market.
This is the second major fire incident at a market in Dhaka in the last two weeks.
The devastating fire on April 4 at Dhaka's Bangabazar market gutted thousands of shops. ■
