RAMALLAH/JERUSALEM, March 23 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian was killed on Thursday by Israeli soldiers during an Israeli raid in the northern West Bank, Palestinian medics and Israeli sources said.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a statement that Amir Imar Abu Khadijeh, 25, was shot dead amid an Israeli military raid and siege of his house in the village of Izbat Shoufa, southeast of the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm.
The Israeli army said in a statement that Abu Khadijeh was involved in several shooting attacks on Israeli communities and security forces.
During the raid, Israeli Border Police officers surrounded the apartment where the suspect was hiding, "following precise intelligence," according to the statement.
Abu Khadijeh reportedly drew a gun within the apartment at the forces, who responded with live fire, the army stated.
Eyewitnesses said that large Israeli forces stormed the village of Izbat Shufa, and surrounded a house in which Abu Khadijeh was holed up.
He was a commander of a local armed squad. The Tulkarm Brigade, a Palestinian armed group operating in the city, announced that Abu Khadijeh, one of its "leaders and founders, was killed as a result of a cowardly assassination," threatening to "revenge his death soon."
The death of Abu Khadijeh brings the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank since January 1 to 90, according to official Palestinian statistics.
Israel argues that the raids are necessary to apprehend suspects involved in a series of attacks that resulted in the deaths of 15 people, as reported by official figures. ■
