KATHMANDU, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen people were killed and 20 others injured on Thursday when a passenger bus overturned in Nepal's Bara district.
The bus with 51 passengers onboard was heading toward the southern city of Birgunj from Hetauda when the accident happened on the country's East-West Highway.
"Fifteen people were declared dead in different hospitals, while one succumbed to the injury in the course of treatment," Balram Shrestha, police spokesman from the neighboring Makwanpur district, told Xinhua.
"The injured are receiving treatment in a medical college in Chitwan," he said, adding that several of them were in critical condition.
A preliminary investigation has suggested overspeeding as the cause of the accident, Shrestha said. ■
