NUKU'ALOFA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A batch of emergency supplies donated by China has arrived in Tonga to help the South Pacific island country's disaster relief work.

The donation includes drinking water, food and other emergency materials worth about 44,000 U.S. dollars.

Poasi Tei, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of National Emergency Management Committee of Tonga expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Chinese government for the donation.

He said this is the first donation of its kind the country has received after the disaster.

Meanwhile, China has also donated 100,000 U.S. dollars in cash as emergency humanitarian aid for Tonga.

The Chinese government will provide Tonga with more emergency materials such as drinking water, food, personal protective equipment and disaster relief equipment, which will arrive as soon as the airport resumes operation.

Tsunami waves hit Tonga last Saturday. The tsunami followed a series of violent eruptions from underwater Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano, 65 km north of the country's main island Tongatapu. Three deaths have been confirmed so far.

The tsunami had a significant impact on part of the foreshore of Tonga, with boats and large boulders washed ashore and shops along the coast damaged.
